What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that your body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism. These functions are controlled by the Central Nervous System-brain and spinal cord.
A common interference to the nervous system is the spinal column. The spinal column is comprised of 24 moving, weight bearing bones. A loss of normal position or motion of these bones can cause irritation to the nerves, tissues and muscles surrounding the spine. It is this irritation to the nerves, tissues and muscles that can result in impaired function and pain.
Our goal at Faulkenberry Chiroractic in Little Rock is to detect which joint is not functioning correctly and perform specific correction to these areas. In addition to manipulation we also offer specific exercises and stretches to help in long term support of the affected area.
What is an Adjustment?
An adjustment is a therapy in which the doctor applies their hands to the area that is to be treated and mobilizes the joint. A short impulse is applied to the joint and this may cause an audible “pop” or “click” in the joint. The goals of an adjustment are to increase joint mobility, relieve pain, and to decrease spasm.
What is the popping sound?
The popping sound is created by the release of gas in the spinal joints.
Is it bad to pop my own back or neck?
This question is frequently asked because people associate the popping or cracking of one’s back or neck with an adjustment. If a person has a desire to crack his or her neck or back it is often because that area of the spine is fixated causing another area of the spine to be hypermobile or move too much. It is the fixated area that needs to be adjusted properly so that other areas of the spine will not become more hypermobile. Many times when your own back there is temporary relief as a result of the endorphins released. However, the pain usually comes back because the fixated area of the spine has not been corrected. A chiropractic adjustment is a specific force, in a specific direction, to a specific joint to correct fixations. A person that habitually cracks his or her neck/back should see a Doctor of Chiropractic to be evaluated.
Should I use Ice or Heat?
Ice should be used on a new injury or a re-injury to an area. Ice helps reduce swelling and prevents further swelling which can interfere with the healing process. Do not use Ice for more than 15-20 minutes per hour. Never place ice directly on the skin—always put a barrier like a thin cloth between the skin and the ice.
Heat is best for minor aches and pains. It brings blood to an area which allows more nutrients and can promote healing. However, too much heat can cause swelling. Do not use heat for more than 15 minutes per hour. Always have a barrier between the heat source and the skin to avoid burns. However, if in doubt whether to use ice or heat—use ice. It is best to consult your doctor before using heat.
